Shawn C. Burdette (b. 12 August 1975 in Elkview, West Virginia, is an Associate Professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the Worcester Polytechnic Institute.

Early Life and Biography

Burdette was born in Charleston, West Virginia to Charlotte and David Burdette in 1975. He grew up on the banks of the Elk River just a few miles away from the Elk Refinery, which was the first commercial ethylene plant in the world. Burdette graduated from Herbert Hoover High School in 1993 and achieved the rank of Eagle Scout in 1990. He currently lives in Connecticut with his wife Emma (WPI '98) and their greyhounds that were adopted from Connecticut Greyhound Adoption. In his spare time, Burdette enjoys cycling, running and swimming, occasionally competing in road races and triathlons.

Education and Training

After graduating from high school, Burdette enrolled at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, OH where he earned his B.S. in chemistry in 1997. As an undergraduate, he worked in the labs of John D. Protasiewicz on multiple bonding between main group elements stabilized by sterically demanding ligands. He then moved to Boston, MA where he attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology to study bioinorganic chemistry. He earned his Ph.D. in 2003 under the direction of Stephen J. Lippard working on zinc metalloneurochemistry and fluorescent sensors. Following his graduate career, Burdette traveled across the country to Berkeley, CA to study dendrimers in the laboratories of Jean Fréchet at the University of California, Berkeley. as an NIH Postdoctoral Fellow.

Academic Appointments

After completing his postdoctoral research in 2005, Burdette started his independent career in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Connecticut. In 2011, Burdette moved his research group to the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the Worcester Polytechnic Institute. In 2015, he was promoted to Associate Professor. In 2022, he was promoted to Professor.
