Characterization of New Compounds
From BurdetteLab
All compounds should be named according to IUPAC nomenclature.
Different guidelines for characterization will apply depending on which of the following categories a compound falls into:
1. New compounds not previously reported in the literature that will be reported in a publication require:
- a. IR Spectrum
- b. 1H-NMR (no solvents, no impurities)
- c. 13C-NMR (with good signal-to-noise)
- d. Mass Spectra
- e. Elemental Analysis
- f. Heteroatom NMR as appropriate
2. New compounds which are not expected to be reported in a publication require:
- a. 1H-NMR (no solvents, no impurities)
- b. 13C-NMR (with good signal-to-noise)
- c. Mass Spectra
3. Compounds previously reported in the literature require:
- a. Sufficient data for the definitive correlation to the previously reported data.
- b. A sample write up of characterization data can be found in the experimental sections of the papers in Publications
