CrownCast-1 is a Cast-type photocage that was developed by Daniel Kennedy with the assistance of Celina Gwizdala. The receptor is a 15-C-5 macrocyclic azacrown ether. CrownCast-1 binds an array of M2+ ions non-aqueous solution, and decreases affinity after photolysis. The photolysis results in the introduction of an electron withdrawing carbonyl group para to the aniline that decreases the electron density on nitrogen atom and therefore the M2+ affinity.
