ZinCast-1 is a Cast-type photocage that was developed by Celina Gwizdala with the assistance of Daniel Kennedy. The receptor is a tridentate DPA chelator. ZinCast-1 has an ~15 μM affinity for Zn2+ that decreases to ~mM in aqueous solution after photolysis. The photolysis results in the introduction of an electron withdrawing carbonyl group para to the aniline that decreases the electron density on nitrogen atom and therefore the Zn2+ affinity.
