ZinCleav-1 is a Cleav-type photocage that was developed by Dhammika Bandara with the assistance of Daniel Kennedy and Elif Akin. The receptor is a tetradendate chelator that incorporates two amino nitrogen donors and two pyridine ligands. ZinCleav-1 has an ~1 pM affinity for Zn2+ that decreases to ~mM in aqueous solution after photolysis. The photolysis results in the cleavage of a nitrogen-carbon bond, which fragments the ligand into two pieces.
